An Example of the Sonnet

Twenty-Four Hours
by Jennifer Miyakawa

How I have driven past you with desire.
How I have sighed and looked away ashamed.
Ashamed was I by the force of this fire,
By this love to which I cannot give name.
Remembering reflections in my cup,
And sweet and syrupy sticky fingers,
And words of welcome when I’d come to sup,
And words of wisdom when I’d choose to linger.

Yet I am no superlative lover
I worry over how long I’ve been gone
Yet you tell me not to fret or bother
And with sweet coffee you usher me home.
Like returning to an ever-patient spouse
Is my arrival at the Waffle House.
