Best Journals

Submitting your work to a literary journal is a risky business.  Chances are about 1 in 15 that your work will be accepted.  Some people paper their walls with rejection slips.  And most writers frame their first acceptance letter.  But since part of the reason to write is to share your work, we urge you to consider doing so after perusing the journals below.  Be sure to include a cover letter with any submission.

The Fourth River accepts nonfiction, short fiction, poetry, and young adult/children’s short fiction (without illustration). Please send up to seven poems or up to 7,000 words of prose to the appropriate section editor. Due to the volume of submissions, we will recycle all the manuscripts we receive. Please do not send us your only copy.

Watershed, Brown University's journal of environment and culture seeks submissions of prose, poetry, and art. Produced by undergraduates, the biannual journal poses the question "what is natural?" and seeks to engage students and professionals alike in a round table environmental and artistic discussion. The journal has been fortunate to publish poetry by professionals Robert Creeley and W.S. Merwin, and pieces by Joan Gussow, Annie Proulx, and Terry Tempest Williams, among many other fabulous features, many by students.
