The Warren Wilson College Teacher Education Program is reinventing itself. The new program will be a 5th year program wherein those persons who already hold a bachelors degree in any area then enroll in our Education Department to earn their teaching licensure. Students will conduct a year’s internship in a host school in the city/counties around Asheville. This new program will not add an additional year to our current four-year program. Once the new program is in place, the four-year program will cease to exist.
GOAL: The goal of this new program is to have about 24 students per year beginning in the fall of 2010. At this time, the Education Department is collecting Background Information from interested participants. An Application for Acceptance Form to the program will be developed soon. Those persons who completed a Background Information form will be notified when the Application for Acceptance form is complete. The Background Information Form can be obtained from the Education Department web page or by contacting Nancy Hofmann at: (828) 771-7088 or nhofmann@warren-wilson.edu.
COMMUNITY PARTNERS: Local schools and Charter Schools will become partners in the 5th Year Program. Warren Wilson will utilize smart teachers in our local community who would be willing to share a year with one of our 5th Year Program students. With partners in place, our interns would be able to work with different levels of expertise in their host school.
EDUCATION COURSES: In order to complete the required education courses for licensure, 5th Year Program students would have pullout sessions taught not only by Warren Wilson College educators but by community partners as well.
REQUIREMENTS: The Education Department is currently studying issues related to cost of attendance, licensure, admissions and financial aid. Once in place, all of these requirements will be published on the Education Department’s Web page.
TRIAD: The year of internship would give pressure to commit to and identify oneself as a teacher while remaining in sequence with the Warren Wilson College Triad.
