Internships with the ELC

Genesis Wildlife Sanctuary
Environmental Leadership Center of Warren Wilson College
Internship Program · Summer

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF INTERNSHIP:

Loosely begun in 1983 by a nurse who moved from Florida and was unable to find a close rehab center for which to volunteer. Thus began a rehab center in Beech Mountain to care for those orphans or injured wildlife. By 1993, her endeavor had become too expensive to bear alone. The name Genesis Animal Sanctuary became an entity with charitable status. Around 1995, the name was changed officially to Genesis Wildlife Sanctuary, Inc. Each year, we handle about 500 birds/animals on a rehab status. We maintain a Conservation Center for the containment of those birds and animals unable to return to the wild. Some of these are used in educational programs and many are used in display habitats.

Genesis now reaches into 4 states for educational programs, is linked internationally through the Bob Ross Foundation and receives wildlife statewide for rehabilitation. We currently have two active sites for rehab with several outreach rehab programs funded by Genesis.

While case by case admissions constitute the bulk of our care, we recognize the need for education and prevention. Our outreach programs travel over four states and, by internet, reach international proportions. The mssion of Genesis is to change lives, changes manner of thinking so that we preserve our habitats and its wildlife. We strive to serve others and make our world a kinder more compassionate world.

Job Description

DESCRIPTION OF INTERN RESPONSIBILITIES:

This is a "live-in" position with two interns sharing responsibilities for the center's wildlife rehabilitation program. The center is fully staffed from 9am-4pm seven days a week. During those hours, the employees are experienced staff specializing in high level emergency and rehabilitation care for wildlife. This is an excellent learning opportunity for the individual interested in any area of wildlife preservation. During the "off hours", an experienced rescuer is on call. The intern is encouraged to respond with a rescuer to any emergency so they she/he might benefit from this learning experience.

The intern will learn wildlife rescue from the initial admission to release. Daily weight monitoring, dietary needs, care of wounds or splints, physical therapy and medication administration will be within the daily duties of each intern. During the spring and summer months, orphans constitute the bulk of admissions. The intern will learn the proper dietary needs of individual species, how to identify a featherless or furless orphan and decide the proper diet for that species.

The senior intern will actively participate in both on-site and outreach educational programs. They will assist a permanent employee in the various functions and handle the raptors and mammals used in these programs. Self- motivation and high energy is a definite plus to Genesis. We seek those special individuals interested in truly making a difference during their life- time and leaving a mark when they leave.

The senior intern is expected to fulfill a 40 hour work week. That time is highly flexible, so that the intern might also have the time to enjoy our mountain activities such as hiking, biking, rock climbing, white-water rafting, boating, etc. We work hard, but we also play hard! Prior experience in rehab is not necessary, but we require an intense appreciation in wildlife and environment and a strong commitment to the care of same. We expect hard work and expect the intern to place the animal's or bird's welfare above all else.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The position of senior intern should be filled by a college student with a focus on environmental preservation or wildlife biology.

WE ARE A DRUG-FREE CENTER AND DO NOT TOLERATE DRUG USE ON SITE. THE ONLY CAUSE FOR IMMEDIATE TERMINATION IS ACTIVE DRUG USE ON SITE OR ABUSE OR NEGLECT OF THE WILDLIFE OR ANIMALS ON SITE.

COMPENSATION:

Interns earn a stipend of $100.00 weekly with room and board provided. You are certain to have a wonderful learning experience at Genesis in a very family-like atmosphere.
