Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont
Environmental Leadership Center of Warren Wilson College
Internship Program · Summer
"...How can one measure the feeling of seeing the reflection of the oldest mountain chain in the world in the lit up eyes of a child witnessing their first water snake or the expression on a teenager's face who just reached the summit of a mountain when they thought they didn't have what it took physically or emotionally to reach that goal? My major accomplishment last summer was that I was able to love, learn, and share my life and the beauty of life itself with people of all ages and backgrounds for the benefit of both the human experience and the biota. I have come back to Warren Wilson with a renewed sense of hope and a burning sense of urgency. My teaching experience at Tremont reinforced my desire to be involved with science education and, perhaps more importantly, showed me there is meaningful work waiting for me when I'm done with my studies.
...Last summer was quite simply a celebration of the diversity and richness of life. That, to me, is what environmental education is. It is meant to provide us with concrete, meaningful experiences to enrich our lives through the appreciation of all living things. Environmental educators facilitate the experience. Mother Nature does her magic. She reminds us of our roots. She reminds us who we really are, regardless of age, race, gender or social class. We are the human animal. We are a part of, no greater and no less than, the miracle of life on this planet." -Tom Gilfoy
