Description: Diamond D is a beef cow/calf and registered dairy goat agri-business in Smith County, Tennessee in operation for 7 years. Integrated within Diamond D is Peaceful Pastures, a direct market, all natural food business producing beef, chicken, turkey, pork, duck, goat and lamb in a pasture-based, non-confinement environment.
Requirements of job to be filled: A college student or vet school student; must be willing to put in long hours and be physically fit and capable of repeatedly lifting and carrying heavy weights (bales of hay, feed, etc.). Applicants must posses an open mind for working with various species of animals and have strong communication skills, both written and oral, including excellent grammar for interacting with our meats customers. A valid driver’s license is required, along with reliable transportation. Candidates must be self-motivated and able to work independently at a brisk pace with minimal supervision. The job may require concise, ongoing supervision of part-time employees. Our setting is strictly drug, alcohol and tobacco free.
Educational Benefits: At the end of this internship, the individual will have learned what components and commitments are necessary for taking a commodity from conception to the plate. This is an excellent opportunity for animal science and pre-vet students to gain hands on, multiple species experience. Some financial information will be made available to the student for comparative analysis. In addition, the student will have experienced the joys and sorrows that are a part of production agriculture as well as the pleasures and pitfalls of a retail business. Prior to completion of this internship a 1000 word essay or equal project is to be submitted.
Compensation: At least one meal per workday will be provided during working hours. Meat, milk, eggs and garden produce are available as well. Housing may be provided; this will be discussed at your initial interview. Free pasture board for one horse or the opportunity to lease a horse for the term of employment.
Community life and surroundings: Located in the scenic Cumberland Plateau of the Tennessee Smokey Mountains. There are numerous church denominations within 20 miles. Five colleges are located within an hour. Boating, fishing and swimming are available in local rivers and 2 large, man-made lakes. Nashville, Music City USA, is less than an hour away.
Please Note: In order to be eligible for the internship, students must commit to a full semester, 12 weeks of work, minimum. (This requirement is non-negotiable.) With the internship, we offer $6.50 -7.00/hour salary, meals while you work, and we may provide subsidized housing and utilities (except for phone.) Interns are expected to begin work the week following finals and must show proof of medical insurance.

INTERNSHIP GUIDELINES
You may be a good candidate if:
1. You enjoy working outside, regardless of the weather.
2. You like not having a set routine for each day.
3. You love animals - manure and all.
4. Learning new things appeals to you - especially skills specific to your intended career.
This job may not be for you if:
1. You have back, shoulder or knee problems. You WILL be lifting 50 pounds several times each day.
2. You want/need to go somewhere every weekend. This job is very physically demanding and you will want/need weekends to rest.
3. You are a vegetarian or vegan.
4. Health issues require you eat at specific times each day.
5. A flourishing social life is very important to you.
