BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF INTERNSHIP:

Scottie's Place is a special needs camp for homeless children. The mission of the camp is to empower, educate and enliven homeless children through programs that emphasize wilderness adventure, pioneer living and community service. While at camp the children undergo mental and physical challenge that is essential for personal growth. The child:staff ratio is 3:1 to ensure that the children receive the attention they need to achieve their potential. Scottie's Place serves urban and rural areas within a five hundred mile radius of the camp. Children have come from Charleston WV, Roanoke VA, Raleigh and Charlotte NC, Philadelphia PA and Washington DC.

Job Description

DESCRIPTION OF INTERN RESPONSIBILITIES:

The purpose of our intern program is to teach leadership, behavior management and counseling skills. The primary role of the intern is to mentor the children who come to Scottie's Place, to provide guidance, encouragement and model appropriate behavior. Interns help counselors ensure the health and safety of campers and make sure campers have an enjoyable and rewarding experience. Interns work with counselors to develop and implement program activities and provide support to directors and counselors as we backpack through the mountains, canoe the New River, set up primitive camps, build outbuildings and train and care for the pack and farm animals. Interns will provide positive role models for children in all aspects of camp life, from conflict resolution to meal preparation, from farm chores to community service projects. Additionally, interns are expected to assist in the setting up and breaking down of camp before and after sessions. Tasks between sessions include building projects, garden work, research and administrative work.

QUALIFICATIONS:

A student in good standing at Warren Wilson College who qualifies through the ELC's internship program. Interns should also have the following qualifications and qualities:

• an interest in working with special needs children and the patience, creativity and flexibility that is required when serving needy children
• previous camping experience and a love for the outdoors in all weather conditions
• a powerful work ethic.


Interns should also possess the following characteristics:

• belief that you can make a difference in the life of a child
• ability to work well with children of all ages and interests
• ability to take charge and motivate others
• ability to see the opportunity for change that is inherent in crisis and conflict
• ability to work well in high stress situations and in close proximity with others
• enthusiasm for living and an appreciation and respect for all races, cultures, religions and abilities.


Finally, the intern must meet all follow-up requirements mandated by the ELC's Environmental Internship Program.

COMPENSATION:

Scottie's Place will pay $800 for an eight-week commitment to the camp. Additionally, Scottie's Place will provide room and board and all the necessary camping gear and supplies required for the internship. The camp will provide certification training in CPR and first aid.
