Margo N. Flood
Director

Margo has a lifelong commitment to inspiring positive change and fostering a reverence for life and community through deep connection to the natural world. In her work, she has come to embrace and promote a decision-making model that brings awareness to the economic, social/cultural, and environmental impacts of our personal and institutional actions upon the local and global community. Since 2000, Margo has worked for the ELC as Heartstone Editor, publications manager, program evaluation manager, researching and promoting best practices in sustainability in higher education, developing statewide forums to encourage business sector involvement, managing regional sustainability research projects, Expedition trip-leading, and overseeing the fundraising activities of the ELC. With a B.A. in English from the University of Florida, Master's work in English and Counseling, and extensive non-degree coursework, she has served as teacher, administrator, wilderness instructor, writer, fundraiser, consultant, and workshop designer/presenter for leadership development. This work has included more than fifteen years with Outward Bound and Outward Bound-adaptive programs where she served, most recently, as Managing Director of the North Carolina Outward Bound School.

Stan Cross

Stan graduated with a BA in Psychology- concentration in Environmental Psychology- from Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, NY, in 1993. Stan has a life long love and admiration for nature, human communities and the interdependent dance of the two. While living abroad, Stan studied environmental education at the University of Adelaide, Australia and taught for environmental organizations in Australia, Taiwan, New Zealand and Thailand. Since returning to America, Stan taught environmental education for the Connecticut Audubon Society and Schooner, Inc., coordinated the Singing River Field Center in Northern New Mexico and began working for the ELC in 2000. Stan directs the ELC's environmental education programs which include local and national EcoTeam and the Internship Program. He is a member of Warren Wilson campus greening committee and co-leads the College's campus greening student work crew. Stan also serves on the boards of Environmental Educators of North Carolina and Evergreen Community Charter School.



Phillip R. Gibson
Director of Research and Community Outreach

Since July 2005, Phillip has served the Environmental Leadership Center with a focus on strengthening the connections between science and public policy. Prior to this position, Phillip served as the French Broad Riverkeeper™ and the natural resources program manager for the Mountain Resource Center of Western Carolina University. Phillip has also served the Southern Appalachian Man and Biosphere Cooperative, National Wildlife Federation, and the Ecological Society of America. Phillip earned his B. A. in political science from the University of Louisville and his M. S. in geography from Southern Illinois University - Carbondale with an emphasis in medical geography. Phillip is presently enrolled as a PhD student with Western Michigan University. Additionally, he is enrolled with the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill's certificate program in field epidemiology. Phillip has served many boards and organizations including the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation Advisory Panel, two terms with the North Carolina Sedimentation Control Commission, vice-chair of the Jackson County NC Planning Board, co-chair of NC State University Cooperative Extension Natural Resources Leadership Institute, and the Evergreen Community Charter School. Phillip lives in Asheville area with his wife, son, and two great danes.
