If you have a user account at Warren Wilson, you have a 100 megabyte home directory that can be accessed from any computer on campus. It holds your mail directories and a directory called public_html in which you can store your personal web pages. The rest of the directory is yours to fill as you choose. Your home directory can be accessed from the campus network by following the steps below.
Windows 98 and ME
- Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel and open Network.
- Be sure Primary Network Logon is set for Client For Microsoft Networks.
- Restart and logon with your user name and password.
- Right click on My Computer and select Map Network Drive.
- In the labs we use drive M:, and you can too (it is an arbitrary choice).
- For the path enter \\raptor\homes and be sure to check the box for Reconnect at Logon.
- Now each time you log on to the network, your home directory will show up as drive M: in My Computer.
Windows XP
- Right click on My Computer (in your Start Panel or on your desktop) and select Map
Network Drive.
- In the labs we use drive M:, and you can too (it is an arbitrary choice).
- For the path enter \\raptor\homes and be sure to check the box for Reconnect at Logon.
- Enter your user name and password when prompted.
- Every time your computer starts, you will need to manually log on to your network drive.
Go to My Computer, double-click homes on Raptor (M:), and enter your user name and password.
- If an error message appears at the bottom-right of your screen at startup saying that a network device could not be connected, don't worry. This just means that you need to log on to your network drive to use it.
Macintosh (OS 9.x and earlier)
- Go to the Apple menu and select Chooser.
- Click on AppleShare.
- Look for a computer named Raptor in the list on the right and double click on it. If you do
not see it, click on Server IP Address, enter raptor, and click on Connect.
- Enter your user name and password.
- Select Home Directory. If you always want to be prompted to log on to your home directory at
startup, check the box to the right.
- Your home directory will show up as a volume on your desktop.
Macintosh (OS X)
- In the Finder, go to the Go menu and select Connect to Server.
- Type smb://raptor/homes in the box.
- A dialog box asking for your username and password will appear.
- Enter your WWC user name and password.
- A window will appear showing the contents of your home directory.
