Note: Each spring, students who intend to continue their studies at Warren Wilson for the following year are given the chance to reclaim their current rooms (what we call a "squatters rights") or they can enter our Room Lottery to select a new one. Following are some basic instructions on the how, when and where. Read ALL instructions. Then talk to your roommate. Don't assume that they already know your plans. They may have some that conflict with yours!
I. Room Registration Information
Room registration is simply letting Housing know a couple of things with regard to your plans for next year: a) whether you would like to keep your same room or, (b) do you have definite plans to move in with someone else who is keeping their current room (or is someone moving in with you in your current space) or, (c) do you want to enter our "lottery" to select a new room (with or without a roommate although, in most cases, it is to your big advantage to have one) or (d) do you not need for us to reserve a place for you for next fall.
II. "Squatters Rights" Information
You must have a roommate for next year in order to claim squatters rights, unless you are in a designated single. Otherwise you lose first rights to reclaim your current room. In some cases, we will not be able to honor "squatters" requests as we intend to block off groups of rooms in certain dorms for incoming students. Where this occurs, those who had indicated they wished to be "squatters" would be given the first option of selecting another room in the same building.
III. Special Squatters Rights Information for Schafer and Village (New for 2008)
The Student Life Committee has determined that, for Schafer and Village, you must have at least one-half of the suite returning to their current rooms in order for anyone in the suite to retain "squatters rights." Those that meet this requirement will have a chance to fill the remainder of the suite prior to the Lottery. After that time, the remaining rooms in the suite may be filled by anyone who so chooses or during the incoming student room assignment process.
IV. Information for those seeking to move into Schafer or Village suites(different from above)
The student Life Committee will accept applications from, and give priority to, groups who wish to present an affinity proposal to fill a suite. An affinity proposal would be a group of like-minded individuals who wish to have some sort of theme or particular area of interest for their suite. Applicants will be notified prior to the registration deadline if they have or have not had their proposal accepted. It is not, however, a requirement to have an affinity proposal to live there.
V. Room Selection ("Lottery") Information
The Room Lottery will again have a slightly different format for the Spring of '08. Instead of all selections taking place in one evening, the selections will occur over a period of several days. It will be held the week of April 20-24, 2008 in Dodge House. It will begin on Sunday evening, April 20 at 6 pm, with pairs involving current, returning seniors (see priorities listed below). It will then continue on Monday, 4/21 at 5:30 pm for current, returning juniors and their roommates; on Tuesday, 4/22 at 5:30 pm for current, returning sophomores and their roommates; on Wednesday, 4/23 for current, returning freshmen and their roommates, and conclude on Thursday, 4/26 at 5:30 pm for singles-seekers, those without roommates wanting new rooms and others who might have missed earlier opportunities.
If you have chosen to be in the lottery, you will be notified of approximate arrival time in order to reduce your wait. At that time you will select a room for next semester from the available spaces. Current class standings, not projected ones, will be utilized.
Priorities (current class standing; not as projected for next semester)
VI. The "Rules"
A. You must register for classes (min. 12 hrs.) for the fall semester in order to reserve a room.
B. If you are not reclaiming your present room you must attend the lottery unless you are moving in with a squatter. See definition of "squatter." Anyone who has a scheduling conflict with the lottery may have someone other than themselves, or the roommate, designated to select for them.
C. Those who sign up for rooms in Wellness agree not to smoke, not to consume alcohol, non-prescription drugs, or prescribed ones in a non-prescribed manner in or near the premises, or in any excess fashion, while residing there. Those who choose Korevec (a designated "Quiet" dorm) or Eco will follow all dorm-decided practices.
D. You may not reclaim your room and enter the room lottery.
E. You may not sign up with a roommate who will be gone on a semester-long trip.
F. Anyone who ends up without a roommate after the lottery will likely be combined with someone else, before school is out or over the summer, and could lose the room they selected.
VII. Private rooms
Housing will set aside a select number of rooms, in certain dorms, as designated private rooms. All private rooms, including those granted for documented medically-related reasons, will be an additional $700 per semester for the 2008-09 school year. Students who have been approved for this classification will have the first choice of these rooms, which will be guaranteed as private rooms. No other rooms can be guaranteed as privates, regardless of status, until all incoming students have been placed this summer.
VIII. Medically-related private rooms
Those students who wish to apply for private rooms based on documented, medically-related reasons should contact Deborah Braden, Educational Access Coordinator to find out exactly what documentation is necessary. Students who have been approved for this classification will have the first choice of the designated private rooms, which will be guaranteed as such.
IX. Requesting a non-medical private room
Again, we expect a quite limited number of private rooms, except for those designated ones, to be available at the beginning of school. Students who want to apply for a (non-medical) private room other than a designated one should first select a roommate for next year, then notify Housing that they wish to be placed on the single room waiting list. Once all incoming students for the fall are placed, those on the wait list will be offered any remaining unfilled rooms.
*X. If you want to move to Schafer for next year
You must be part of a group of 8, which may include some current residents needing to fill out a suite. No single or half-filled rooms will be permitted during registration or the Lottery. Once you register to be in the lottery, send a separate email to Jon Verner listing all of those who are part of your group and their current class standings, along with specific information about what specific suite in Schafer A, B, or C that you are hoping for. Selection will be in order of total credit hours for the eight-person suite, except where squatters are involved. (* See section IV.)
XI. ViIlage* or Dorland suite
Those wishing to fill a complete Village suite should send a separate email to Jon Verner (jverner) indicating the names of those in their group. You must have enough people to fill an entire suite. If there are singles involved, please indicate which students are hoping to fill those. Groups of four may enter the lottery to claim both rooms of a Dorland suite. After you register online, send a separate email to Jon Verner to list the names of the four people. Selection, in both instances, will be in order of total credit hours for the suites. (* For those interested in the Village, please carefully review section IV.)
