What We Do:

The Landscaping Crew at Warren Wilson takes care of the 60-acre core campus, cleaning and beautifying areas that students, faculty, and visitors use every day. We strive to provide and maintain an attractive landscape which supports the college’s commitment to aesthetics and environmental responsibility. With this goal in mind, we emphasize using sustainable native species and materials, and draught and pest-resistant plants. We are introducing edible landscaping to select areas around campus, and incorporating native grasses into design elements.

Landscaping’s many regular tasks include maintaining a healthy turf, mowing lawns, weeding flowerbeds, planting bulbs, raking leaves, removing snow, and cleaning up the campus.

In addition to the general crew, we have six sub-crews that work within Landscaping, are led by students, and are generally independent:

If you want to learn more about what each sub-crew does specifically, each has its own page and pictures.

Who We Are:

The crew currently has 47 students and two supervisors—Tom LaMuraglia and Renee Fortner.

Mel

We have one volunteer, Mel Seifert. He and his wife, June, recently retired after working 29 years at Sheldon-Jackson College in Sitka, Alaska, and are volunteering at Warren Wilson College full time. We could not get by without everything that Mel does.

 Current Projects

Landscaping has been hard at work preparing a space for a brick patio in front of Devries Gym.

The patio will be constructed using bricks from the recently demolished Carson building. Students have been cleaning the bricks for several weeks to prepare them for placement in the patio.

TCIA09

Some members of the tree crew recently attended and competed in the Tree Care Industry Association's annual expo. Read more about it here!
