General Faculty Development Information
 

• The ACA  (Appalachian College Association) is a source for many faculty opportunities.  See also professional development opportunities for librarians on the Central Library section of the page.

• The Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education ( The POD Network ) and its members lead and support change for the improvement of higher education through faculty, instructional, and organizational development activities.  It provides information about faculty development programs and offers some grant opportunities.

• The Scholarly Societies Project , hosted by the University of Waterloo Electronic Library, is international in scope and provides subject guides to associations and organizations in different academic fields.  The site is also useful to identify meetings and conferences held by the societies listed.

Fellowships, Internships and Seminars
 
 

• The Association of American Colleges & Universities (AAC&U) offers a variety of faculty development opportunities.  One such opportunity is the Faculty Fellows Internship Program in Washington, D.C.

• The Council for Christian Colleges & Universities, with the support of the John Templeton foundation, invites application for the John Templeton Oxford Seminars on Science and Christianity.  Application criteria can be found http://www.cccu.org/projects/templeton.

• Fulbright Exchanges.  The Council for International Exchange of Scholars administers the prestigious  Fulbright Scholars Programs.

• Salzburg Seminars. The ACA fully funds attendance of these prestigious international seminars for qualified faculty from member institutions.

Funding Sources--General

• The Appalachian Regional Commission, a partnership organization between the federal government and the thirteen states in the Appalachian area, provides funds for community development and education. The grant program provides specific information for North Carolina.

• The Foundation Center describes itself as your guide to philanthropy on the web.  The Foundation Directory Online is part of this site.  The WWC Office for College Relations subscribes to this service.

• The Grant Advisor is a comprehensive guide to funding opportunities.  This resource requires an institutional subscription. (College Relations does not subscribes to this).

• The Grant Getting Page , put together by the University of Illinois at Chicago, provides links to many grant sources (check URL).

• The National Endowment for the Arts offers many grant opportunities.  See http://arts.endow.gov/guide/ for grant application forms.

• The National Endowment for the Humanities also provides online application materials.

• The National Institute of Health of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services provides grants and funding opportunities.  For example, the NIH Academic Research Enhancement Award (AREA) Grants - (R15) "support individual research projects in the biomedical and behavioral sciences conducted by faculty, and involving their undergraduate students, who are located in health professional schools and other academic components that have not been major recipients of NIH research grant funds."

• To find grant opportunities for education and research in science and technology, go to the National Science Foundation  pages.

• The American Chemical Society provides grant funding for undergraduate faculty sabbaticals.  See details here.

• The Sabbatical in the Parks Program "was created to assist in arranging faculty sabbaticals to conduct research and other scholarly activity, which provides usable knowledge for NPS management and/or advances science and human understanding. The Sabbatical in the Parks Program is open to tenure-track faculty members from four-year institutions of higher education in the U.S., who have successfully competed for sabbaticals according to the

procedures of their institution."
 
• The Sigler Foundation. Among other things, the Sigler Foundation provides "support for faculty sabbaticals when the faculty member plans to devote a substantial portion of the sabbatical to providing service to a private non-profit or public organization" (quoted from the web site). Specifics about the application process are provided on the site.

 

• The Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance offers an online grant writing tutorial.  Click here to access it.

• Annual Register of Grant Support:  A Directory of Funding Sources. Medford, NY:  Information Today, Inc.,
2003.  This source provides information on more than 3,500 programs that fund, among others, fellowships, study grants, and research in many academic areas. Proposal writing tips are also included.  On order for the library.

• The Environmental Resource Handbook.  Millerton, NY : Universal Reference, Grey House Publishing, 2001.
Available in the library (R 363.7003 E61 2001).  Pages 202-216 provide information on foundations, charities,    and scholarships.
