To find books:

Reference books can provide a good introduction to your issue.  They can also help you find organizations that are working on your issue.
Here are a few titles:

          Drug Abuse Handbook (R616.86 D794 1998).
Encyclopedia of World Environmental History (R 304.203 E56 2004)
The Environmental Encyclopedia (R 363.7003 E61 2003)
The Environmental Guidebook (R 363.7 S789e 2002).  This source also lists environmental organizations, complete with Web contacts.
Great Events from History II.  Ecology and the Environment Series.  (R 363.7 G786)
Handbook of Environmental Health (R363.7 K84h 2003)
Make a Difference:  America's Guide to Volunteering and Community Service. (R 361.3702573 B645m 2003).
The chapter on environment and sustainable
communities lists organizations you may want to contact.

To find books on your chosen topic in our library:
Connect to the library homepage and choose Books, Videos and CDs at the top of the list .   Then select MCLN Catalog.
Also search for online books.  The link is right below the MCLN Catalog.

If we do not have the books you need, look in WorldCat for books anywhere in the world.  It is listed below the link to ebooks.

To find journal articles:

We have about 150 databases for journal articles. You can see them on the  library homepage by selecting Articles and Databases.
Which ones will work best for you depends on your topic.
Ask a librarian for help in selecting those.  Whatever your topic, the ones listed below will get you started.

Academic Search Elite
Applied Science and Technology Index
Annual Reviews
SIRS Researcher

To get books and journal articles from other libraries:

Use our Interlibrary Loan Service.  It works like this:

Go to the library homepage
Choose Library Services, then Interlibrary Loan.  You will find two request forms, one for books and the other for journal articles.
Ask a librarian for help the first time you fill out one of these.

Note that it may take one week or longer for the materials to get here.

To find high-quality, freely available Web resources:

You may want to use the site that your textbook author, Doug McKenzie-Mohr, has put together.  http://www.cbsm.com/

Also, look at the web sites that librarians have collected in an area that suits your topic.
You find these sites by going to the
library homepage.
Select Web Resources.
The category Environment should work for everyone.  Depending on your topic, other categories may also have useful resources for you.

Now, do a Google search.
From the
library homepage select Search the Net.
Be sure to do an Advanced Search.
