Books, Videos & CDs:

Reference Books are a great way to start any research. Warren Wilson College has an good collection of reference books covering music, literature and art. Here is a list of selected Reference Books.

Reference books, as well as all of our other books (and videos, DVDs, and CDs) can also be found through our Online Catalog.

To find books in other libraries:
Other Library Catalogs - ABLS, UNCA, UNC-CH, etc.
WorldCat - searches the collections of libraries all over the world and indexes books, audiovisuals, & archival and manuscript materials.
NetLibrary and other E-Book Collections - around 60,000 full-text online e-books, covering all subjects.

Online Reference Sources:

Encyclopaedia Britannica Online - we also have this in the paper edition on the reference shelves (Call # R 030 B862).

American National Biography - a great biographical resource (only includes deceased figures). Includes linked cross-references, bibliographies, and links to selected web sites.

Biography Resource Center - will help you find brief and scholarly information about well known figures.

Magazines & Journal Articles:

We have around 20,000 periodical subscriptions online. We still have a few in paper in the library also! Included in the latter category is our Alternative Press Collection.

You might try looking in these "Big Full Text" databases first - they try to cover all subjects and contain lots of full-text articles:
Academic Search Premier
MasterFILE Premier
Proquest Research Library

JSTOR - a great full-text source covering many disciplines (e.g., history, politics, sociology, etc.). Has a time lag for most articles, so it's not good for current information, but many articles date back to the 1800s and later, so it is excellent for historical coverage.

Here are a few other good sources:
Alternative Press Index and Archive
America: History and Life
Columbia International Affairs Online
PAIS International and Archive
SIRS Researcher
Sociological Abstracts
Women and Social Movements in the United States, 1600-2000
Worldwide Political Science Abstracts

There may also be other useful databases, depending on your topic. Take a look at our complete list of databases.

Newspapers:

Ethnic NewsWatch
The New York Times - full coverage back to 2004.
The New York Times Historical - full coverage back to the first issue in 1851 through 2003.
