Departmental Newsletter

Twice a year the department produces a newsletter that is written and edited by students. You have a chance to become involved in the production, writing and editing of this publication.

Program Planning and Design Course

This technical writing course challenges you to develop a comprehensive professional quality adventure education program.

Trip Leader Practicum

This is a structured and supervised opportunity for you to co-lead outdoor recreational trips for the College Outing Program. This experience helps you to integrate academic studies with field work.

International/Cross Cultural Experiences

The Outdoor Leadership Studies department has offered a variety of international educational learning opportunities that are focused on adventure travel and eco-tourism. Courses have taken place in northern Patagonia, Costa Rica, Scotland, and New Zealand.

Internships

This is a credit bearing carefully-planned work experience related to your academic focus. Typically the job is located off-campus and offers you exceptional nontraditional educational opportunities.

Wilderness Instructor leading and teaching rock climbing, backpacking and canoeing at various camps throughout the US
Challenge course facilitators.
Program Coordinator for Adventure Education Programs.
Logistics Coordinator for Outward Bound programs.
Assistant Instructor for Outward Bound program.
Raft Guides.
Customer Service Representative for Dia-Compe USA.
Canoe and Wilderness Instructor for Farm and Wilderness School.
Environmental Education Instructor for Audobon Society Summer Camp.

North Carolina Outward Bound School

We offer an intensive and focused Instructor Development Practicum through the NCOBS. It is a field based course that is offered during Term III. There are also opportunities to do specialized internships and volunteer work with the school. Examples include base site support, logistics and administrate support all of which can help you move into field instructor positions.

Assisting with Courses

For those students who demonstrate high quality work, a positive attitude and commitment to academic excellence and have demonstrated a strong skill base, there are opportunities to assist the faculty with some courses.
