Adventure Learning Lab

Warren Wilson College's new Adventure Learning Lab has taken its place on campus, offering opportunities for personal and group development to members of the campus and the community at large

The Laura Gossmann '91 and Tim Cannon '89 Memorial Lab, designed and donated to the college by Alpine Towers Inc., is being dedicated this fall. The facility fulfills the need to have a versatile and universal oriented challenge course on campus.

As Warren Wilson has developed its program in Outdoor Leadership, the need for such a complex has grown more and more apparent. "The potential benefit to our community is tremendous," states Marty O'Keefe, an instructor in the Outdoor Leadership Program. "Not only will our Residence Hall staff, athletic teams, and virtually any other campus groups have access to this facility, we will be able to extend the service we offer to community groups.

"Perhaps the greatest benefit," Marty adds, "is that our Outdoor Leadership students will have two to three years of experience leading groups on this equipment, which is unheard of."

Michael Flowe '89 and Joe Lackey '90 envisioned this facility as a way to memorialize Tim Cannon and Laura Gossmann for their contributions to the spirit of our community. As a river guide in North Carolina and in Denali National Park, Tim was heavily involved in outdoor adventures. Laura's adventuring took her across the globe, including Europe and the West Indies.

The spirit of their journeys was reflected in the vibrancy of their lives and the care and concern they held for others. The shock of Laura's death in 1991 was compounded by the sudden loss of Tim in 1994.

"I hope those who knew Laura and Tim will be interested in participating in this memorial as a way to remember their contributions to the Warren Wilson community," Joe Lackey says. He and Michael Flowe hope that this community's spirit will be strengthened by working together on this memorial.

Alumni representatives in those classes nearest to Laura's and Tim's will be working to contact their classmates to support this project. For more information on this program, please contact J. Clarkson '95 at (828)771-3756 or clarkson@warren-wilson.edu.
