You selected Answer A: The Moon lies partly in the Earth's shadow. Apparently you have confused a lunar eclipse with the crescent Moon.  Please see the recent lunar eclipse PPOW of March 3, 2007 (posted March 9, 2007) .

Also compare the moon emerging from Earth's shadow from the March 3 eclipse with the December crescent Moon below.

Eclipse.  The Moon is partially covered by Earth's shadow.  Notice how little curvature there is to Earth's shadow.
Crescent Moon.  Notice the curvature of the terminator - the line dividing the light and dark parts of the Moon.
