Independent Studies

The independent study allows students to further investigate a particular topic of interest. The student meets regularly with a faculty advisor to devise a plan of study which includes a reading list in the area of interest.  More details on proposing and completing the study are found on the required Application Form.

Bridget Bryne - Native American Culture on Pine Ridge Reservation, South Dakota
Explores the lives and culture of Native Americans, particularly focusing on the Oglala Lakota of Pine Ridge, South Dakota. The first 8 weeks of this course will involve learning about the Oglala Lakota from psychological theories and research, personal stories, documentaries, guest speakers, on-line resources, and group discussion. Then there will be a week-long Service-Learning trip to Pine Ridge, South Dakota during which the student will have a chance to observe and compare what was learned in the classroom with what is learned by first-hand experience on the Reservation.  Particular attention is paid to historical trauma, family systems, health, ceremonies, belief-systems, and language.
