Abstract
Wilderness therapy is an increasingly utilized treatment method for adolescents who engage in deviant behaviors. These behaviors are often associated with underlying symptoms of depression and anxiety. The current study examines wilderness treatment factors and their effects on adolescent depression. The researcher conducted qualitative interviews with program directors, clinical directors, field instructors, parents and past clients of 7 wilderness therapy programs. The interviews were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed for recurring themes. Interviewees suggested that adolescents gain a sense of empowerment when they are encouraged to generalize coping skills learned in the wilderness to their regular lives. Physical activity, improved self-esteem, and an increase in confidence were also suggested to be vital in the treatment process. Interviewees also discussed areas of improvement. This research may indicate areas in which programs could improve efficacy of treatment.
