Richard was born in Southern California, and came to North Carolina via Utah, Colorado, Missouri and Pennsylvania.
Richard has worked in higher education for over 30 years; as a faculty member, department chair, dean, and vice president and for the past 18 years at Warren Wilson College located in Asheville, North Carolina. Serving first as the Dean of Admission and then adding marketing and advancement responsibilities to his duties as the Vice President for Advancement, Admission, and Marketing and now Vice President for Advancement.
Prior to Warren Wilson College, he spent 14 years at Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri where he served as Chair of the Theatre Department, Director of the School of the Arts, and Director of Admission.
For several years, Richard served as the General Manager and Marketing Director at The American Heartland Theatre, an equity theatre in Kansas City owned by Hallmark Cards, and was the program director for Perry-Mansfield School of Performing Arts in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. He also spent many summers as Technical Director at the Utah Shakespearean Festival and the Okoboji Summer Theatre in Iowa. Richard has worked with the Fullerton Civic Light Opera, Knott's Berry Farm, and the Greek Theatre, all in California.
Richard received his BFA from Stephens College and a MFA from Pennsylvania State University. He volunteered at Project Steam, an after-school college-prep program. He has also served as Chair and Vice Chair of Pack Place Performing Arts in Asheville. He assisted The Washington Center for Internships as an enrollment consultant and volunteered on a marketing committee for North Carolina Outward Bound. He is currently a member of a board-appointed task force on marketing for Penland School of Crafts.
Richard has presented at several conferences on admission and marketing topics.
