Jeanne Clery Act

The Jeanne Clery Act is named after Jeanne Clery, a student who was raped and murdered in her residence hall when she was a freshman in college in 1986.  When her parents looked into the situation, they discovered that there had been 38 violent incidents on campus in the three years preceding Clery's murder, none of which had been reported to the student body.  Clery's parents joined with other campus crime victims all across the country and through their efforts a bill was passed through congress in 1990 requiring all campuses which use federal student aid (almost all of them) to report crime statistics on their campuses.  Since its original enactment, the bill has been amended four times.  Amendments have included requirements that campuses afford victims of sexual violence basic rights, as well as protection from retaliation for those who report crimes.  The most recent amendment requires campuses to report fire safety violations.
