Every year, a group of folks from various crews on campus organize Transgender Awareness Week, which is centralized around Transgender Day of Rememberance, which is annually held on November 20th. The week involves educational events including workshops on various topics, panel discussions, and a vigil for the Transgender Day of Rememberance. The mission of Transgender Awareness Week at Warren Wilson College is to provide education and resources surrounding trans-topics as well as support for transgender individuals in the campus community and the greater community in general.
In years past workshop topics have included:
Transgender 101: This workshop is held to educate folks on the language and a vernacular for referring to transgender individuals and topics. It also discussed the process of transitioning and issues facing trans-identified folks and communities in the settings of home, work, education, and society.
Health, Sex, and Sexuality: Led by a collaborative group of students. This workshop was in an open-discussion format for folks to ask questions, raise concerns, and share stories about health, sex, and sexuality.
Exploring the Queer Identity in Spirituality: Led by Teal Van Dyck, guest speaker. This workshop looked at spirituality through the lenses of queer-identities.
Prisoner Realities Workshop: Led by Tranzmission, an organization in Asheville that focuses on Trans issues in prisons. This workshop explored issues presented in the documentary, Cruel & Unusual, and on other experiences within the prison system.
Other events coinciding with Transgender Awareness Week:
Showing documentary Cruel & Unusual—The documentary highlights the stories of four transgender women who are incarcerated in male prisons in the United States. This film is being collaboratively presented as part of the Sustainability Film Series.
Transgender Day of Rememberance Vigil: Annually held in downtown Asheville to remember those who have been killed for their trans-idenities. Candlelight vigils are held worldwide on this day with the same purpose of remembering transgender individual who have been murdered and in hopes to raise awareness to educate and end violence.
