Vagina Monologues

What is it?

The Vaginal Monologues is a series of monologues written by Eve Ensler.  Ensler first performed the monologues in 1996 after interviewing over 200 women about issues surrounding their vaginas.  The monologues cover a huge variety of topics including sexuality, sexual abuse, birth, hair, mystery, and much more.  The Vagina Monologues are performed as part of V-Day, a much larger movement to end violence against women.  Performances take place all over the world in an effort to raise awareness about violence against women.

Spotlight pieces

Eve Ensler continues to travel all over the world interviewing women.  Each year, she writes a new monologue, known as the spotlight piece, which calls attention to current issues happening all around the world.  The monologues are added to the script of original monologues as well as the plethera of previous spotlight pieces.  In recent years, spotlight pieces have focused on the women of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the "comfort women" of Japan, the women of New Orleans, and much more.  This year's spotlight focuses on the women and girls of Haiti.

When is it?

The Warren Wilson Vagina Monologues are performed each year around V-Day.  This year's performances will take place February 25th, 26th, and 27th.  There will be a small cover charge to see the performances.  The procedes will benifit Our VOICE (the Asheville Rape Crisis Center), Helpmate (the Asheville domestic violence center), Tranzmission Prison Project, and the RISE Project.  In the weeks leading up to the Vagina Monologues, there will be tables outside Gladfelter and Cowpie at which you can purchase tickets as well as delicious baked goods.

Why do we perform the Vagina Monologues every year?

The Vagina Monolologues are part of V-Day's movement to end violence against women.  V-Day will continue until the violence stops.  In an effort to raise awareness about violence against women in our own community and our world, Warren Wilson students continue to organize and perform the Vagina Monologues every year.
