North Carolina Campus Compact

In 2003 North Carolina Campus Compact started its AmeriCorps*VISTA Program which places VISTA members in college campuses to support their civic engagement and service-learning programs. Across the state, North Carolina Campus Compact VISTA members are contributing to existing or new programs; engaging students, staff, and faculty in the community; and strengthening partnerships with non-profit or government agencies.

The North Carolina Campus Compact VISTA at Warren Wilson College works in the Ransom Service-Learning House. She/he assists in coordinating campus events such as the Blood Drive, MLK Challenge, Black History Month, Service Day and alternative break service trips. She/he recruits students to tutor and mentor in local after school and in-school programs as well as other weekly or Saturday trips. The VISTA works in conjunction with other staff to enhance the service learning component of First Year Seminars and other course-based academic service learning. The VISTA helps maintain relationships with local community agencies to see how Warren Wilson College students can meet their needs. The VISTA is also involved in regional meetings with other NC Campus Compact VISTA’s in the Western Region and takes part in Professional Development and Quarterly Meetings with all VISTA’s in NC Campus Compact.

What is AmeriCorps*VISTA?

AmeriCorps*VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) was founded in 1964 as part of President Lynden Johnson’s War on Poverty. AmeriCorps VISTA is a national service program upon which volunteers work for non-profit and government organizations that strive to bring people out of poverty. AmeriCorps*VISTA gives citizens the opportunity to make a full-time commitment to lessen poverty through the development of sustainable programs in local non-profit organizations. AmeriCorps*VISTA members commit to one year of service to promote positive growth in communities and are rewarded with a small living allowance, health insurance and an education award or small cash stipend upon completion of their term.
