Description of Agency: The Family Resource Center at Emma (FRCE) is located on the campus of Emma Elementary School in the Emma Community. FRCE improves family’s financial stability by providing emergency assistance through a food pantry to decrease food insecurity indicated by the high and growing demand for food and nutrition assistance; clothing closet; emergency financial assistance for rent, utilities and medical expenses; and holiday assistance. In addition, we provide case management to those who are requesting assistance on an on-going basis. We work with families individually to bring them out of crisis and to financial stability. These services are available to both English and Latino families living in the Emma Community.

Ongoing Service Opportunities

Community Garden/Trail

Our project is our community garden. The concept of the the garden is our community members plant, water, weed, nurture and then harvest the vegetables and herbs. At the end of the harvest season, they are welcome to take the fresh produce home to feed their family. At this time, we need dedicated volunteers to assist us in maintaining the productivity of our garden along with providing guidance in the maintenance. It would be great, but not necessary, to have one or more commit to assisting our Hands On Asheville coordinator throughout all seasons so the garden is productive as many months out of the year as possible. The trail is adjacent to our garden and will require some loving hands to clear the way of downed limbs and debris.

Skills gained will include but not limited to: organizing a program that promotes healthy eating habits to families, assisting families that live at or below poverty level, gaining a positive and hands-on learning experience in horticultues and positive oral communication and teamwork with community members and volunteers.

Volunteers needed: 1-10
