|Description of Agency:
Our mission is to promote educational success for all Asheville City Schools students by engaging and mobilizing the entire community to support enriching and innovative educational activities.
Last year in Asheville, the Listening to Our Teens study asked students, parents, teachers and community members what they felt middle school children were lacking. What was discovered was that preteens need activities that will not only keep them out of trouble, but also challenge them and give them a sense of ownership. In Real Life (IRL) is the answer to their call. Students were asked what interests them and what they would love to do with their after-school time. Taking their suggestions and working with many service providers in the community, we have been able to partner with many great organizations such as LEAF and UNCA to provide students with communty-based programs that will give them exactly what they have been looking for. These programs include but are not limited to:
Intramural Soccer (co-ed)
Volunteers will be asked to help set up for each day of activity; getting kids to the cafeteria, setting up snacks, making sure they get to their program either on or off campus (not transporting, just leading to a bus). Volunteers are also asked to participate in the programs, setting good examples for the students and building relationships with them. Volunteers are asked to make an eight-week commitmentt and show up at least once a week on the same day.
Days/Times: Mon-Fri 3PM-6PM, School year only
Coaches are matched with one student and work on homework, projects and academics for 1 hour per week from start time through May. Coaches are a hybrid between a tutor and a mentor. Relationship building is essential.
Days/Times: Mon-Thurs 8:30AM-5:15AM, School year only
