            ECO 301, Microeconomic Theory

Students analyzed raw donor data at MANNA Food Bank to identify trends and consistent patterns, and then compiled their findings in a comprehensive report.

 

            EDU 305, Educational Psychology

            Professor Annie Jonas

Students assist teachers in classrooms at Evergreen Charter School and then teach one class period. In addition to this hands-on work, each student completes four hours of service to Evergreen.

Professor Mallory McDuff

Students developed environmental lesson plans and worked with several local schools and retirement facilities to teach class sessions based on water quality, community gardening, simple living, and Project WILD.

 

            ENS 222, Community Organizing

Students conducted a needs assessment for Climate Corps by doing on-site interviews with local businesses and organizations.  Students presented findings to a community meeting on Green Jobs.

 

            ENS 426, Methods and Materials in Environmental Education      

            Professor Mallory McDuff

Students designed an on-site field experience at the WWC Garden for low-income senior citizens at Battery Park and Vanderbilt Apartment complexes. Community partners included Council on Aging and Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project.  Students also organized a two-day “Where Does Your Food Come From?” for 3nd graders.

 

            ENS 395, Ecology of Food

Students worked in four teams and undertook food-related fundraising and capacity-building projects for local agencies.

 

            ODL 310, Initiatives

Students designed and then facilitated a number of daylong team building programs for local Buncombe County schools and AB-Tech.

 

            ODL 322, Challenge Course Facilitation and Management

            Professor Marty O’Keefe

Students facilitated the challenge course for local 9th graders and individuals with disabilities.

 

            PSY 203, Child Development

Students volunteered at a variety of middle school mentoring and tutoring programs.

 

            PSY 204, Adolescent Development

Students volunteered at a variety of agencies and schools that work with high school age youth.

 

            PSY 205, Adult Development and Aging

Students researched life stories of residents at Black Mountain Center and produced biographical ID cards to be used by Center Staff and Doctors.

 

            PSY 298, Psychology of Creativity

            Professor Kathryn Burleson

Students participated in creativity exercises at a facility for the elderly and vision-impaired, including the painting of a large mural for the residents.

             

            SWK 201, Introduction to Social Work

Students performed service work for a variety of agencies and organizations in the Asheville area.  Service had to be in direct contact with people.

            SWK 210, The History of Social Work and Social Welfare

Students conducted surveys of national food banks about methods and techniques of community food drives and gave the results to MANNA Food Bank’s Food Drive Committee.

 

            SWK 305, Human Behavior and the Social Environment I

Students performed intakes on Swannanoa residents who qualify for the Swannanoa Emergency Assistance Program.

 

            SWK 420, Social Work Practice 2

            Professor Lucy Lawrence

Students worked with the Swannanoa Community Council on organizational mission and vision, plus completed an organizational assessment.

 

            WMS 401, Gender and Social Change

            Professor Laura Vance

Students performed informal surveys of local pharmacies on behalf of Planned Parenthood to identify stores offering emergency contraception.  Students will then assist Planned Parenthood in a letter campaign based on their findings.

 

            WRI 142, Introduction to Writing for the Media

            Professor John Bowers

Students created several media projects to be used by MANNA Food Bank in its community food drive initiative.
