The river this year was the French Broad instead of the Rocky Broad, but the result of the 1998 Freshman Service Day matched that of 1997: a rousing success for the community and for the environment. About 400 students, staff and faculty worked together this past Friday to clean up an urban stretch of the river in Asheville?s French Broad River Park area. In addition to removing tons of debris from the river, banks and roadsides, workers did a variety of landscaping tasks in the park itself. The efforts of Carolyn Wallace, Tom LaMuraglia, Katherine Daven and everyone involved were nothing short of outstanding. The project received a major assist from the staff at Biltmore Estate and from 19 other businesses that provided food, drink, equipment and transportation. "All of you are heroes ? community heroes," Asheville Mayor Leni Sitnick said at the picnic dinner and celebration. "If all of Asheville had been out here applauding you, it wouldn?t have been enough." RiverLink Director Karen Cragnolin, a member of the WWC Board of Visitors, said the cleanup "epitomizes what needs to happen to protect this river and all our rivers. I cannot thank you enough for what you?ve done."
