Brian Ammons, Chaplain & Director of Spiritual Life

As Chaplain and Director of Spiritual Life, I tend to the spiritual wellness of the campus community through educational programming, supporting campus faith groups, supervising the (very amazing and gifted) Spiritual Life Crew, one-on-one pastoral care and support, and maintaining a visible presence on and around campus.

I started my career as a middle school teacher and moved on to get a M.Ed. in Special Education at UNC-Charlotte. I then pursued a M.Div. at Wake Forest University and was ordained in the tradition of the Alliance of Baptists. I served a church in Raleigh as Minister with Students and then later, I earned a Ph.D. at UNC-Greensboro in Curriculum and Cultural Studies, and Women's and Gender Studies.
I came to Warren Wilson from a faculty appointment at Duke, where I was running the minor in Education and teaching courses on social justice, class, gender, race, and sexual identity in learning institutions (including, but not limited to schools). I've also taught courses on sexualities and the church and ministry in the Appalachian region for the Wake Forest University Divinity School.

A favorite, very short poem comes from a favorite mystic/poet:

I'd love to live as the river flows
carried by the surprise
of it's own unfolding. ~John O'Donohue~
