Mathematics & Computer
Science
The Department offers a core of traditional
pure and applied courses as well as various courses supporting other disciplines.
Opportunities open to Mathematics and Computer Science graduates are diverse,
plentiful and rewarding. These include teaching,
programming
and computer systems work,
scientific
and engineering applications,
actuarial
traineeships, and
statistical applications.
Many areas in graduate school are available to a Mathematics graduate.
In addition to the mathematical and other sciences, these areas include
engineering,
operations
research, statistics,
information
systems, and business.
The Mathematics and Computer Science Department offers
a major in Mathematics, a minor
in Computer Science, and a minor in Mathematics.
The College has excellent computing facilities available to students for
their course work and personal projects. These include numerous microcomputers
on a local area network with access to the World Wide Web.

Faculty:
The Mathematics
Major
Requirements: a minimum of 40 credit hours distributed as follows:
-
MAT 201 Computer Science I
-
MAT 241 Calculus I
-
MAT 242 Calculus II
-
MAT 243 Calculus III
-
MAT 250 Linear Algebra
-
MAT 251 Differential Equations
-
Four more MAT courses numbered above 304
With the approval of the department, course work in
other departments which is heavily mathematical may count toward the four
electives. Participation in the Natural
Science Seminar is also required. (See Natural Sciences and Mathematics
listings for further information.) The major also requires a concentration
of four courses in another discipline outside mathematics and computer
science; this sequence must be approved by the department. The department
can assist majors in finding summer internships to enhance their course
work. Students desiring to teach mathematics at the secondary school level
should consult the Education
Department for accreditation requirements.
Honors Program.
Graduation in Mathematics with Honors is possible
for qualified students. See the description under Natural
Sciences and Mathematics listings.
The Mathematics
Minor
A minor in Mathematics is appropriate for those interested
in fields in which mathematical reasoning or models are essential; these
include the natural and social sciences, philosophy, and economics.
Requirements: a minimum of 20 credit hours as follows:
-
MAT 201 Computer Science I
-
MAT 241 Calculus I
-
MAT 242 Calculus II
-
Two additional courses at or above MAT 243, excluding MAT 303 and MAT 304.
The Computer
Science Minor
A minor in Computer Science is open to students majoring
in any field. It is particularly useful for students who have a substantive
interest in mathematics, natural or social science, or business and who
intend to work in an environment in which data analysis and programming
are integral parts.
Requirements: a minimum of 24 credit hours including the following:
-
MAT 201 Computer Science I
-
MAT 202 Computer Science II
-
MAT 303 Computer Science III
-
MAT 304 Computer Science IV
-
Two additional courses in mathematics from among MAT 141 (Statistics) and courses above MAT 202
A student who is majoring in mathematics and pursuing
this minor need take only three rather than four math electives above MAT
304.
