Marionette CMS

Marionette is an online Content Management System (CMS). It is designed to allow faculty, staff, and students to generate great looking, content-rich web pages without needing to know complex computer languages such as PHP, Javascript, and HTML.

The rich editor is a plug-in called FCKEditor. This powerful Javascript-based technology allows users to manage website content within a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editor similar to Microsoft Word. Here's what it looks like:

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

While Marionette may seem extremely easy to use at first glance, there are a handful of notes that you should become very familiar with:

  1. Do not use Safari to edit pages. Use FireFox.
  2. Do not use special characters in file names or image names. I say stick with a-z, 0-9, periods, and underscores.
  3. Do not use the anchor tool in the Rich Editor. Normal links work well, but the anchor feature is broken.
  4. Do not use the Insert Image tool in the Rich Editor. Instead, use the Image Library (near the top of the page). Click on the thumbnail of the image you want, then drag the full-size version into the editor where you would like it to be placed.
  5. To wrap text around an image, right-click the image in the Rich Editor and select Image Properties. In the popup, set Alignment to either Right or Left.
  6. In the Rich Editor, [Enter] will create a new paragraph (about equal to two line-breaks), while SHIFT-[Enter] will give you a normal line-break.
  7. Marionette will not allow you to move files from folder to folder. To re-locate files (do NOT re-locate images), mount the corresponding M: drive in My Computer (via the Tools >> Map Network Drive menu item), then navigate to M:\public_html. The files in there are the same as on Marionette.
  8. Images uploaded to the web should be small (no larger than 500 pixels wide, 72 pixels per inch). If you need an image resizer, I can recommend PIXResizer (free; http://bluefive.pair.com/pixresizer.htm). You should upload images through the Image Upload feature located in the main menu of the Site Manager.
  9. To edit the left side-bar menu of your page, simply use the Edit Main Navigation tool in the main menu of the site
    manager.
  10. SAVE YOUR WORK before leaving the editor. There are no auto-save features in Marionette. Also, take note of the "create a backup of this file" feature next to the save button. This will allow you to have up to 10 back-ups of the same file. Keep in mind that, if you check this box, it will create a backup of the file as it appears in the editor above. To revert to an old back-up, simply click the "Revert" action next to the file name in the site manager.
