What We Offer:
The core of the Writing Center’s work is the one-on-one writing conference, a 30 or 60 minute session with one of our friendly crew members. It is fine to come before you begin writing; often, a conversation with a peer is just the thing to help you get started. If you do come with a draft, a crew member will read the draft with you and have a conversation with you about your ideas and your writing. Together, you will set goals and work on aspects of your paper, such as organization, analysis, citing outside sources, or writing style. You may schedule a session in advance or drop by lower Sunderland during our regular hours. We also have weekly hours at the library.
Consider enrolling in Weekly Writing Sessions (WRI 105) if you want to improve your writing skills generally and would benefit from structure and ongoing feedback. Each enrolled student meets weekly with a crew member under the guidance of the Writing Center director. Some students meet in a small group to work on creative writing. The course is one-credit, pass-fai
We lead classroom visits and hold in-house instructional workshops on a variety of academic, creative, and personal writing topics. For example, a faculty member may request a workshop in advance of a paper assignment on a topic such as integrating outside sources or organizing the paper. Or a student group may want help writing materials for an activist campaign. We can also visit a class, crew, or group simply to introduce ourselves and describe the Writing Center’s offerings.
Our resource library includes a number of style and writing guides, which can answer many of your writing questions, from when to use a semicolon to how to overcome writer’s block. The Writing Center offers a congenial space where you can study, write, enjoy a cup of coffee or tea, and talk with your peers.

Julie: This is my fourth year directing the Writing Center at Warren Wilson. I hold a BA in English from Oberlin College and an MA and PhD in Education from UNC-Chapel Hill. I teach new peer tutors through the course "Theory and Practice in Tutoring Writing" and oversee the one-to-one peer tutoring and project work of all Writing Center crew. I also teach a service-learning course, through which students and I partner with local agencies to teach writing to adolescents and adults beyond our campus. As Director of College Composition, I work with faculty to address students' writing needs in their first year and in writing-heavy courses across the curriculum.
We have moved all of our appointment scheduling online; click here to make an appointment to meet with a peer tutor in the Writing Center or the library. The Writing Center is in lower Sunderland, on the side closest to Vining. On Sunday and Thursday evenings, we tutor in the McGuire Room of the library. If you are working on a piece of writing for a course, bring a copy of your assignment, your notes, and two copies of any draft you have started. It is also fine to come before you begin drafting.
