EcoDorm achieves LEED Platinum Certification
Warren Wilson’s iconic EcoDorm, which opened in 2003 as a pioneering model of energy-efficient building designs and renewable-energy sources, has become the first building on a college campus to achieve LEED Platinum certification in the Existing Buildings category.
EcoDorm, the first Platinum building of any kind on the Warren Wilson campus, joins the Orr Cottage and the Village South and Village North residence halls as LEED certified buildings. Each of the other buildings achieved LEED Gold for New Construction.
LEED, an acronym for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is a rating system of the U.S. Green Building Council that sets standards for the "design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings." The category of Existing Buildings: Operations & Maintenance “identifies and rewards current best practices and provides an outline for buildings to use less energy, water and natural resources; improve the indoor environment; and uncover operating inefficiencies.” You can find more information on LEED here.
Sleepy summer on campus? Not exactly
After a relatively calm June, the month of July on the Warren Wilson campus is always a whirlwind of activity. This July will be no exception.
One of the biggest campus events each July is the Summer Open House for prospective students and their families, hosted by the admission office. Information about this year’s Open House, scheduled for July 10 from 9:30 a.m. till mid-afternoon, can be found here.
Summer Open House occurs during another major July event: the summer residency of the MFA Program for Writers. MFA students and their professors descend on the campus for a fast and furious 10 days, enhanced for everyone by a series of public readings and lectures July 2-11. You can find the public schedule here.
After kicking off its 40th season in June, the 2009 Swannanoa Chamber Music Festival continues well into July with Tuesday programs in Kittredge Theater on July 7, 14 and 21. Click here for details about the entire season.
The Swannanoa Gathering, the highly popular series of folk arts workshops, and the gastronomically diverse Swannanoa School of Culinary Arts also set up shop on campus in July. More details on the Gathering can be found here and on the SSCA here.
Of course, there are other enduring pleasures on campus such as the Garden Market. And even though there are no undergraduate classes during the summer, many students have campus work contracts for a few weeks or more. The fact is that July is anything but a quiet month at Warren Wilson, with people coming to campus from near and far for a variety of reasons.
