Why Animal Science at Warren Wilson?
- Our College Farm: Our working College Farm provides opportunities for hands-on experiences with cows, pigs, sheep, chickens and more.
- The Vet School Advantage: We are one of the only colleges in the country where students can earn the animal contact hours they need to apply to veterinary school — right here on campus.
- Real-World Preparation: Our approach to learning bridges classroom concepts with real-world experience. You’ll develop practical skills in animal care and livestock management and be prepared for a career in animal care, research, agriculture, and veterinary science.
- Climate-Forward Practices: Our program is rooted in evidence-based sustainable and regenerative agricultural practices. You’ll collaborate with faculty and staff to use and further refine innovative approaches, preparing you for a climate-forward career.
- Our Unique Work Program: Through our Work Program, you can channel your skills and curiosities working in the College garden, farm, and forests, assisting with conservation projects, caring for animals on campus, or supporting faculty research.

Research
In collaboration with a South Carolina zoo, Olive McNair observed behaviors of a squirrel monkey troop and classified them with an ethogram to evaluate the troop’s social health.
Research
Kat Strickland conducted a study using pork samples from Warren Wilson (raised on pasture) to evaluate their characteristics and compare them to conventionally raised pork. Additionally, Kat conducted a triangle test to evaluate whether consumers could discern a difference between the pork samples. Kat presented their findings at UNC-Asheville’s undergraduate research symposium.
