Potential and Ability

Wisdom

Admission to Warren Wilson College is a selective process based on both the potential and academic qualifications of the applicant. All available information is considered, including previous academic records, evidence of academic and social maturity, extra curricular activities, community service, score on the SAT or ACT, interview, essay, references, recent grade trends and general contributions to school and community. The criteria are designed to identify a balanced student with high standards of scholarship, personal integrity, and a desire to support the mission of the College.

The College also accepts the Universal College Application.

First Year Applicant Procedures

The College requires that admitted students possess a high school diploma and successfully complete a minimum of twelve academic units (a unit is one year's study). A college preparatory curriculum, including the following classes is required:
four years of English,
Algebra I,
Algebra II,
Geometry,
two years of laboratory sciences,
and three years of social sciences.
Two years of foreign language are strongly recommended.
You must submit the following items by February 28, for admission in the Fall Semester:

  1. An application
  2. An official high school transcript
  3. SAT or ACT test scores (SAT Code 5886/ACT Code 3170)
  4. The Evaluation Report Form (to be completed by the High School Counselor)
  5. A personal essay

Home School Students must submit:

  1. An application
  2. A personal essay
  3. A transcript listing course titles and content
  4. SAT or ACT test scores (the SAT does not meet ATB requirements for federal aid)
  5. An interview (phone or in person)
  6. A partial portfolio of sample work completed (graded papers)
  7. Letter of recommendation (not from a parent)
  8. A document that serves as the "diploma"
  9. A copy of the state rules under which the "school" was formed or is recognized, if not in North Carolina
  10. Interviews are not required but strongly recommended.

Transfer Applicant Procedures

Transfer students should have completed a college preparatory curriculum in high school, but successful completion of college-level classes will be given more weight than high school. Transfer students must be eligible to return to their most recently attended college, be in good standing and should have a cumulative GPA above 2.5 (courses with D are not accepted for transfer but are calculated into your GPA). You must submit the following items by February 28:

  1. An application
  2. All official high school and college transcripts
  3. SAT or ACT test scores (if transferring less than 28 credits)
  4. The Evaluation Report Form (from the most recent institution)
  5. A personal essay

Readmission Applicant Procedure

Former Warren Wilson College students who wish to be considered for re-admission should submit:

  1. An application
  2. Any college transcripts since attending Warren Wilson
  3. Statement explaining why you left and why you wish to return

Early Decision

If you are certain that Warren Wilson is the right place for you, you should consider applying for Early Decision. Applying for Early Decision means you will not apply ED to other colleges or universities, and if accepted, you will enroll at Warren Wilson College. Applications for admission in the Fall 2009 Semester must be received by November 15, 2008 and decisions will be mailed out on December 1, 2008. A $300 non-refundable deposit is due by December 20, 2008.

Notification of Admission Decisions

The College will notify you about fall admission beginning February 1, 2008 and will continue until the class is filled.

How and when to commit to Warren Wilson

If you are accepted and decide to enroll at the College, please send your $300 non-refundable deposit before May 1, 2008. After May 1, deposits will be accepted only if space is available.
