A sixth generation Floridian, Jan Wolff spent many childhood vacations in the mountains around Asheville, and knew that she would ultimately live there, trading in ocean breezes for crisp mountain air. Graduating from Fletcher Sr. HS in 1987, Jan decided to venture further north than she had ever been before, to Franklin Pierce College in New Hampshire. Four years of excellent skiing and bachelor’s degrees in both anthropology and history were well worth the student loans she is still paying off. But it was her work study experience, as a tour guide for the admission office, that led her to seek the role of an admission counselor after graduation in 1991. Since Asheville was always her ultimate destination, she decided to apply for a job as an Admission Counselor at Warren Wilson College, and has been here ever since. During her interview, when asked why she felt she would be a good representative for the College, she remembers answering very quickly, “This is where I am meant to be. I will retire here.”
She began by recruiting students from Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Mississippii and Arkansas, and then after four years, added the states of Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, and California. After 20 years of traveling , she spent the last two years as the Director of Admission Services. But one thing was missing in this new role, and that was working with students from Florida. So she got it back and now plans to travel from Amelia Island to Key West, determined to find anyone in Florida who is yearning for a change of seasons and a beautiful mountain college to call home.
When she is not working, she drags her husband and two daughters to cemeteries to find their ancestors, and brakes for historical markers everywhere. Formerly a Trekkie, she shifted her obsessions from Deep Space Nine to Hogwarts and Winterfell. And walks.
