Celebrating December 2010 and May 2011 graduates
Thursday, May 12
Friday, May 13
Saturday, May 14
Pioneering oceanographer Sylvia Earle, currently National Geographic Society Explorer-in-Residence, will deliver the main address at the 2011 Commencement.
Since her first scuba dive at age 17, Earle has logged more than 6,000 diving hours while leading more than 50 expeditions. She set the world record for the deepest untethered solo ocean dive (1,250 feet). A longtime champion of the preservation and exploration of marine ecosystems, she was named the first “Hero for the Planet” by Time magazine and a “Living Legend” by The Library of Congress.
Commencement will mark a second visit to Warren Wilson for Earle, who spoke at the College’s Davidson Roundtable in 2007. Her return is perhaps timelier than ever, as evident from this link to a January article about her leading an expedition to the Gulf of Mexico to study areas affected by the Deepwater Horizon spill.
Invitations/Tickets are not required for admission to the Saturday ceremony. There is no limit on the number of guests that a graduate may invite.
Available at the Student Activities Office in Gladfelter Student Center on campus: $3 for 5.
Please follow signs and park in designated areas: behind Kittredge Theater, near Jensen Academic building, DeVries Gym, and at the Chapel. Remember, all streets are fire lanes at Warren Wilson.
Ceremony held rain or shine. In case of severe inclement weather, alternate plans will be announced.
