11/12/08 - Learn more about sustainable study abroad! 11/12/2008 - 15:32 Are you concerned about the environmental and cultural impact of study abroad? You can learn more about ways to make your study abroad experience environmentally and socially sustainable at Green Passport. Warren Wilson works towards sustainable study abroad in many ways, including using public transportation whenever possible, encouraging students to off-set the carbon costs of their plane travel, and working with local host country organizations whenever possible. A major component of every study abroad course is learning about a host country’s history, political situation, current events, cultural groups and intercultural dynamics, religion, geography and cultural traditions, so that students will be informed and respectful guests of that nation.

10/13/08 - Foreign travel immunizations 10/13/2008 - 10:37

SWK 377 and LAN 37X students, it is time for you to think about obtaining your recommended foreign travel immunizations. You may review these recommendations by visiting the Center for Disease Control’s website (www.cdc.gov/travel) and selecting Costa Rica as your destination.

You may wish to discuss this and obtain your immunizations from your own physician when you're home over fall break. You can also get immunizations at the the Buncombe County Health Department. To schedule an appointment with the Buncombe County Health Department, call 250-5096 .  Appointments should be at least 4-6 weeks prior to departure. Appointments may be scheduled from 8:30 to 3:30, Mondays through Thursdays. Asheville Infectious Disease Consultants also provides travel immunizations. You may reach them at 258-9635.

At the County Health Department, be prepared to pay for your immunizations with cash, check, Visa, Discover, or Mastercard. Save your receipts. Your insurance company or health plan may reimburse these costs. It is very important that you bring your immunization records with you. You may get a copy of these records from the WWC Health Center. With at least 24 hours notice, the Health Center can also provide rides to the County Health Department.

Warren Wilson does not require vaccinations from any student. However, we strongly recommend that you discuss travel health and immunizations with a physician and follow their recommendations.
