My Story
Since 2002, it’s been my tremendous privilege to practice and learn the finer nuances of the fiery arts alongside many accomplished smiths, committed educators, and talented students across diverse learning communities and professional settings.
After graduate school and 5 years as a studio assistant to an Illinois based sculptor, I spent a decade developing curriculum and teaching ceramics and metals at high schools in Montana and Colorado, joining Warren Wilson College in 2017.
To engage one of the world’s oldest technologies and storied crafts within a liberal arts curriculum, grounds a practice in contexts that cultivates the critical, creative, and professional capacities to lead purposeful lives and contribute to sustainable communities. Traits that are distinctly Warren Wilson.
Matthew HaughThe Warren Wilson blacksmith shop is a crucible where disciplines converge - art, craft, design, technology, and culture—sparking unexpected connections and new possibilities. Just as metal holds memory of every strike and heat, education leaves indelible marks—shaping not only what we make, but who we become.
